OUTDOOR KITCHENS: Most Important Part

OUTDOOR KITCHENSTHE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR OUTDOOR KITCHEN IS NOT YOUR 42” GAS GRILL OR YOUR 50” PLASMA TV.

OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES

Cooking outdoors can make preparing food a fun activity instead of a chore; a peaceful way to unwind after a long day or a special way to entertain with style. These are some of the reasons why outdoor living has become more popular. But, this investment could end up costing you more if not done right the first time.

OUTDOOR KITCHEN VENTILATION

Grilling in your outdoor dream kitchen can quickly become a nightmare if not properly vented.  An outdoor kitchen that is roofed or partially enclosed is much like an indoor kitchen; so, appropriate ventilation is not only recommended, it is necessary.  Anything less than proper ventilation to draw out the heat, odor, grease, smoke, and unburned fumes can be a health and fire hazard.

REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE

Top’s received a call from a homeowner who was having problems with her grill in her outdoor kitchen. She said the grill produced so much smoke that the hood was ineffective.  We asked her to take pictures of her grill, hood, and duct work in order to diagnose the issue. She has a 36” outdoor professional gas grill, and above it was an indoor contemporary hood.  The hood was ducted with a 6” pipe that connected to an unusual structure that was causing even more venting obstruction.

LIST OF PROBLEMS

An indoor hood is not rated for an outdoor application and is not appropriate.  Also, the contemporary style hood has a flat design with no canopy to capture the smoke from a professional gas grill.  CFM's for this blower were undersized.  Without the proper size hood, the duct work will not be large either.  The roof jack designed obstructed proper air flow.
